Guwahati, June 11: Four employees of Sribhumi district jail in Assam have been arrested after investigators uncovered their alleged role in smuggling mobile phones and narcotics into the correctional facility. The arrests followed a surprise inspection on February 2, during which authorities seized 29 mobile phones, SIM cards, chargers, and other banned items from different parts of the jail premises.
Assistant jailers Rudra Deori and Subhasish Ghosh, along with warders Masid Ali Laskar and Biswajit Baruah, were taken into custody after evidence pointed to their involvement in facilitating the entry of contraband. The inquiry was initiated following intelligence inputs that inmates were in regular contact with individuals outside the prison, suspected of directing activities from within.
Investigators examined call records linked to the confiscated phones and questioned individuals believed to have knowledge of the operation. Findings suggested that prison personnel played a role in bypassing security measures, leading to the arrests.
Officials confirmed that interrogation of the accused is ongoing, with investigators probing the possibility of a wider network supplying prohibited items to inmates. Authorities have stated that steps are being taken to strengthen prison security and prevent similar incidents in the future.
