The Assam BJP on Saturday warned the Congress party against allegedly attempting to “divide” greater Assamese society, during the second session of its State Executive meeting.

A political resolution presented by Minister Ranjit Das expressed full support for the BJP-led government’s firm stance against illegal foreigners, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The resolution also endorsed efforts to evict illegal encroachers from public land, Assam BJP spokesperson Jayanta Kumar Goswami said.

The resolution received backing from MP Parimal Suklabaidya, Minister Bimal Bora, MLA Nomal Momin, State Chief Spokesperson Kishore Upadhyay, Goalpara District President Dipankar Nath, and other leaders, who highlighted the measures as steps to protect the state’s indigenous population.

In a related development, Chief Minister Sarma chaired a meeting at Lok Sewa Bhawan with Karbi community representatives, civil society members, and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council officials to discuss issues including a recent incident in West Karbi Anglong’s Kheroni area.

Sarma announced that the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council will submit an affidavit on the VGR/PGR land dispute to the Gauhati High Court Division Bench in early January. Karbi civil society groups will also provide their views, and the state government will seek an expedited hearing.

Government offices located on VGR/PGR land in Kheroni will be relocated, while the council plans to fence 8,000 bighas and initiate afforestation to prevent further encroachments. Following a fatal police firing incident, the council will provide employment to the deceased’s next of kin, and the state government will offer Rs 10 lakh as ex-gratia compensation.
