Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the centrally organised Nijut Moina 2.0 cheque distribution programme at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex on Monday. The initiative, under the Mukhyamantrir Nijut Moina Aasoni, aims to empower girl students and support their higher education across the state.
In the 2024–25 session, over 1.6 lakh students benefited from the scheme, and the number has now increased to 3.5 lakh in 2025–26, reflecting the government’s continued focus on girls’ education and empowerment.
Addressing the media after the cheque distribution ceremony, the Chief Minister highlighted the expansion of the scheme and its impact on reducing dropouts. He stated that over 14,200 girl students have enrolled in colleges and universities, and not a single student has dropped out, marking steady progress toward ensuring education for every girl in Assam.
He further said that the Assam government has taken strict measures to end child marriage in the state by launching several initiatives and arresting those involved in the practice.
The Chief Minister added that the government remains committed to empowering the girls of Assam, who are achieving success across various sectors. Apart from government employment opportunities, new avenues in private and global sectors are also being developed to help them achieve greater success.
Under Nijut Moina 2.0, girl students pursuing third-year (fifth semester) degree courses, as well as those studying in polytechnic and ITI institutes, will now be included in the scheme.
