Guwahati, Jan 13: Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma greeted the people of the state on the occasion of Bhogali Bihu and Uruka on Tuesday.
Governor Acharya described Bhogali Bihu, celebrated at the end of the harvesting season, as a festival of abundance, gratitude, and togetherness. He said the festival brings people together in the spirit of sharing and collective joy, transcending caste, creed, language, and religion. Acharya added that Magh Bihu encourages people to stay connected to cultural traditions while promoting development and environmental care.
Chief Minister Sarma said the festival is a time for families to unite and celebrate. Magh Bihu, a three-day festival, begins with Uruka, a night of community feasting. People gather around ‘Bhelaghars’—hay and bamboo structures depicting local themes—for shared meals. On the following day, these structures, along with cylindrical ‘Mejis’, are set ablaze in a ritual to honor the fire god.
