Guwahati, April 7: Tensions between the BJP and Congress escalated on Tuesday as a team from the Assam Police reached the Delhi residence of senior Congress leader Pawan Khera. The police action follows an FIR filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in response to Khera’s recent allegations regarding her citizenship and foreign assets. While Delhi Police reportedly assisted the visiting officers, Khera was not at his residence at the time of the visit. Speaking from Hyderabad, the Congress leader confirmed he was not evading the allegations and stated he would return to Assam later today to address the matter.
The legal confrontation stems from a recent press conference where Khera leveled serious charges against the Chief Minister’s wife, questioning her possession of three different passports from the UAE, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda. Presenting various documents, Khera further alleged that she owned properties in Dubai and a registered company in Wyoming, USA. He pointedly questioned why these purported assets and foreign interests were not disclosed in the Chief Minister’s mandatory election affidavits. The Assam CM immediately dismissed these claims as false and politically motivated, vowing to take the strongest possible legal recourse against the Congress leader.

Amidst the unfolding legal drama, Chief Minister Sarma launched a scathing verbal attack on the Congress leadership during an election rally. He dismissed the influence of leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Gaurav Gogoi, stating he shows his “left thumb” to the party’s threats. Referencing the police action, Sarma warned that he would take “the strongest action” and mockingly remarked that he would “make Pawan Khera into Pawan Peda.” He further asserted that his party is not intimidated by opposition tactics, claiming “we have Hanuman here” to protect their interests.
These high-profile developments have hit a fever pitch just 48 hours before the Assam Legislative Assembly Elections on April 9. While the Chief Minister expressed total confidence that the BJP-led alliance would secure at least 100 seats, the Congress has characterized the police move as an attempt to stifle dissent during the critical “silent period” of the campaign. As both sides dig in, the “passport row” has become a central flashpoint in the final hours of the 2026 state election cycle.
