Guwahati, April 13: Tensions rose in Jerai Gaon after family members of Paresh Baruah, chief of the militant outfit ULFA(I), claimed that shots were fired near their paternal residence in Assam’s Dibrugarh district. The incident reportedly occurred shortly after midnight on Monday, sparking concerns over local security and potential law and order disruptions.
According to Bimal Baruah, the brother of the ULFA(I) leader, two rounds of blank fire were heard in the vicinity of the house. Despite the proximity of the incident, family members noted that the activity was not captured on the property’s CCTV cameras. Bimal Baruah alleged that the act was a deliberate attempt by unknown individuals to incite instability in the region. The Chabua police station was promptly notified of the occurrence.
Local authorities have confirmed that an investigation into the matter is officially underway. Security analysts have noted that the timing of the incident is significant, occurring just days after the return of Arunodoi Dohotia, also known as ‘Arunodoi Asom.’ A former high-ranking aide to Paresh Baruah, Dohotia had surrendered several months ago and returned to his residence in the same area from militant camps in Myanmar only two days prior to the reported shots.
