The Assam government on Tuesday suspended internet services in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts following clashes between two groups protesting an eviction drive, officials said.

At least eight people were injured in the violence, after which police resorted to lathi charges and tear gas to disperse the protesters.

In an official order, the Home and Political Department said the suspension was imposed to maintain public order and prevent the spread of inflammatory messages and rumours through social media and the internet. The restriction will remain in force until further notice.

The order clarified that voice calls and fixed-line broadband services will continue to function during the suspension period.

District magistrates reported a serious law-and-order situation, warning of potential threats to public tranquility. Commissioner and Secretary Biswajit Pegu stated that social media and internet platforms could be misused to spread rumours and provoke further unrest.

The government warned that violations of the order would invite legal action.

Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma termed the situation “very sensitive” and said senior minister Ranoj Pegu was present in the affected areas. He added that efforts were underway to resolve the matter.
