Assam Police have arrested a man from Assam’s Cachar district for allegedly raping and impregnating his 16-year-old daughter in the Udharbond area.
Officials said the crime occurred in 2022 but came to light after the survivor, with the help of Child Helpline, filed a complaint in January this year. The accused had been absconding since then and was finally apprehended on Monday night.
“After receiving the complaint in January, we registered a case and began an investigation. The accused had been on the run for nearly 11 months before his arrest,” said Udharbond Police Station Officer-in-Charge Siimsing Timung.
The victim, who has since given birth to a baby girl, told police that her father repeatedly assaulted her at home and threatened to kill her younger brother if she revealed the matter. The initial complaint was lodged at Rangirkhari Police Outpost in Silchar, about 18 km away, and was later transferred to Udharbond Police Station for investigation.
Police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other relevant laws. Investigators said sufficient evidence had been collected, and a charge-sheet was filed within the mandatory time frame. The accused has been remanded to judicial custody.
