Congress leader Pawan Khera appeared before the Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station on Thursday in connection with the ongoing investigation into allegations surrounding Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. Speaking to reporters outside, Khera stated, “The investigation is underway, and I am cooperating in it.”

The controversy stems from Khera’s April press conference, where he alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma possessed three passports Indian, UAE, and Egyptian and owned undisclosed luxury properties in Dubai along with a company registered in Wyoming, USA. The Sarma family has categorically denied the claims, describing the documents as “AI-generated fabrications” circulated by Pakistani social media groups.

Chief Minister Sarma, responding to the allegations, vowed stern action and accused Khera of fleeing to Hyderabad after police searches. He further suggested that the case could extend to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, asserting that the accusations were politically motivated. Sarma’s remarks also included sharp criticism of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and references to Assam’s historical resistance against invasions.

Earlier, the Supreme Court granted anticipatory bail to Khera in the defamation and forgery case linked to Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. A bench of Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Atul S. Chandurkar observed that the dispute appeared politically charged and did not warrant custodial interrogation at this stage. The court directed Khera to cooperate fully with investigators, refrain from influencing witnesses or tampering with evidence, and not leave the country without prior permission.

The apex court clarified that its observations were confined to the bail proceedings and would not affect the merits of the case. Khera had approached the Supreme Court after the Gauhati High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea on April 24. The investigation remains ongoing, with further proceedings expected to determine the validity of the allegations.
