Guwahati, May 12: A man was detained at the entrance of the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara on Tuesday after live bullets were discovered during routine security screening ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of Assam’s new government. The venue was hosting the oath-taking of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who assumed office for a second consecutive term.

Police confirmed that the individual was taken into custody for questioning and transferred to Basistha police station. While several rounds of live ammunition were found on him, no firearm was recovered. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident and assess whether it posed any security threat.

The discovery occurred minutes before Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma and four other ministers. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, along with over 40 chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from NDA-ruled states.

Alongside Sarma, BJP leaders Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog, AGP’s Atul Bora, and BPF’s Charan Boro were sworn in as ministers. The event followed the NDA’s decisive victory in the Assam Assembly elections, securing 102 of the 126 seats, with the BJP winning 82 constituencies and its allies AGP and BPF claiming 10 each.
