Guwahati, Apr 13: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday referred to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as the “most corrupt” in the country and extended support to party spokesperson Pawan Khera in connection with a legal dispute involving passport-related allegations.

In a post on X, Gandhi called for an investigation into allegations made against Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, who has been accused by Khera of holding multiple passports. “The present CM of Assam is the most corrupt in the country. He will not escape the law. His abuse of state power to harass political opponents and critics is against the Constitution,” Gandhi wrote. He also emphasised the need for transparency and accountability, adding that the Congress party stands with Pawan Khera and will not be intimidated.

The comments came after an FIR was filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma against Pawan Khera over the allegations. Khera had claimed she holds three passports and alleged financial dealings involving the family, claims that have been denied by Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Following the complaint, Assam Police searched Khera’s residence and approached the Supreme Court, challenging a Telangana High Court order that granted him one-week transit anticipatory bail on April 10, directing him to seek relief from an Assam court.

Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi also criticised the Chief Minister, saying he had entered “panic mode” after the reports went viral. He added that political power cannot turn facts into fiction.
