Agartala, May 01, 2026: Fresh data from the Election Commission highlights a surge in voter turnout across multiple states in recent Assembly elections, with several regions recording their highest-ever participation. However, despite these gains, none have been able to surpass the historic turnout achieved by Tripura in 2013.

Tripura continues to hold the distinction of registering the highest-ever voter turnout in the country, with 93.61 per cent participation in the 2013 Assembly polls. While recent elections saw impressive numbers across several states, none managed to exceed this benchmark.

States in the Northeast, including Nagaland and Manipur, have consistently recorded voter turnouts above 90 per cent over the years. Meanwhile, West Bengal reported a significant turnout of 92.67 per cent in its recent Assembly elections—its highest since independence—surpassing its previous record of 84.72 per cent set in 2013.

Other states also witnessed record-breaking participation. Assam registered an all-time high turnout of 85.38 per cent, while Puducherry recorded 89.83 per cent. Tamil Nadu saw voter participation rise to 84.69 per cent, improving upon its earlier peak of 78.29 per cent in 2011.

Gender-wise data showed encouraging trends, with women voters outnumbering men in several states. In Tamil Nadu, women recorded an 85.76 per cent turnout compared to 83.57 per cent among men. Similarly, in West Bengal, female voter participation stood at 92.69 per cent in the first phase of polling, higher than the 90.92 per cent turnout among male voters.

In terms of electorate size, Tamil Nadu had around 5.73 crore voters across its 234 constituencies, while West Bengal, where polling was conducted in two phases, had an electorate of approximately 3.6 crore.
