Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the death of noted singer Zubeen Garg is likely to file its chargesheet by December 8, following approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) since the incident took place abroad.
Sarma reiterated that Garg’s death was not accidental but a case of murder. “We will have to submit the chargesheet of the Zubeen Garg murder case before December 17. I have given the target to submit it by December 8. We are ready,” he said.
The Chief Minister also informed that he met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday to speed up the necessary approval process. “If any incident happens in a foreign country, it needs MHA’s permission before submitting the chargesheet. I think, in the next 3-4 days, the SIT will write to the MHA, and once we get approval, the chargesheet will be filed by December 7, 8, or 9,” he stated.
Sarma further repeated his allegation that Congress MP and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi is “100 percent a Pakistani agent.” Responding to comments by Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, he said he welcomed any legal challenge from Gogoi and hinted that more details would emerge after the chargesheet is filed.
The Chief Minister also announced that the state government will introduce a bill to ban polygamy during the upcoming assembly session on November 25. “If anyone is found practising polygamy, he will face seven years of rigorous imprisonment,” Sarma said.
Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19 in Singapore, reportedly after a drowning incident while attending the Northeast India Festival.
