Guwahati, April 7: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday claimed that the opposition alliance will form the next government in Assam by winning around 72–73 seats out of 126 constituencies in the upcoming assembly elections.

Addressing a press conference, Kharge launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, describing him as the “most corrupt” in India. He alleged that Sarma was working only for his family’s development and running “syndicates in everything — tea, school, coal, egg, land, betel nut.”

Kharge further claimed that Sarma’s cabinet colleagues were also “corrupt” and owned “thousands of crores worth of properties.” He urged RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to respond to the corruption charges.

On Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera’s recent allegations that Sarma’s wife possessed multiple foreign passports and assets abroad, Kharge said the matter should be probed by central agencies. “They have already filed an FIR against Khera. Let them probe the matter. We will face the case as it progresses,” he added.

Kharge also defended Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the Gandhi family, saying they had sacrificed their lives to unite the country. He dismissed accusations of minority appeasement, remarking, “Those who have less brain call Congress pro-Muslim and pro-Pakistan.”
