Agartala, December 30, 2025: Delhi Police has refused permission for a protest and sit-in at Jantar Mantar on December 31, called to demand justice for Angel Chakma. Authorities cited procedural lapses and prevailing law-and-order concerns as reasons for the denial.

In an official letter issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi district, the administration stated that the application submitted by student representatives was filed at short notice and did not comply with existing guidelines. Among the applicants were Bipul Chakma, president of the North-East Students’ Society at Delhi University, and Pointing Thokchom, president of DESU.

The letter further emphasized that any protest application must be filed at least 10 days in advance. It also referred to directives under S.O. No. L&O/48/2022, aligned with the Supreme Court’s July 23, 2018 order, which governs public demonstrations in the capital.

Angel Chakma’s death following a violent attack has sparked widespread outrage across the country. Candlelight marches and protest rallies have been held in several states. Student groups expressed disappointment at the police decision, arguing that peaceful democratic protest is a fundamental right and that the urgency of the issue warranted immediate action.

Despite the denial, organizers conveyed their willingness to cooperate with authorities and indicated they would explore lawful alternatives to continue their campaign for justice. The development has reignited debate over the right to protest in designated spaces and highlighted the challenges faced by student organizations from India’s Northeast in mobilizing timely demonstrations in Delhi.
