Guwahati, Apr 7: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday enforced a 48-hour “silent period” for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections 2026, beginning at 5:00 PM on April 7. During this period, all election campaigning, opinion polls, and voter outreach are prohibited until the conclusion of polling across constituencies on April 9.

Under Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, activities such as public meetings, processions, rallies, and other campaign events are not allowed. Electronic and social media platforms are also barred from disseminating election-related content, including bulk messages, phone calls, or online canvassing. Political workers who are not local voters must leave constituencies immediately after campaigning ends.

District administrations and police are monitoring compliance to ensure a smooth polling process. Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel reminded candidates, political parties, and media organizations to adhere to the guidelines and noted that violations could attract penal action. Opinion polls and survey results are also prohibited under Section 126(1)(b).

Assam will vote in a single phase on April 9, with results scheduled to be declared on May 4.
