Guwahati, April 7: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday delivered a high-decibel campaign speech in Assam’s Barak Valley, asserting that a political “parivartan” (change) is inevitable in West Bengal and promising a total crackdown on illegal immigration across the eastern states. Addressing an election rally on April 7, 2026, Shah declared that once the BJP comes to power in West Bengal, all infiltrators from Assam, Tripura, and Bengal will be sent back to their countries. He framed the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections as a turning point for regional security and the final end to illegal crossings.

Shah launched a scathing attack on the Congress party, accusing it of historically providing shelter to illegal immigrants in the Barak Valley. He claimed that this patronage allowed immigrants to become “predominant” in the districts of Sribhumi, Silchar, and Cachar. The Home Minister further alleged that the Congress continues to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) because it knows the law is a definitive tool to ensure no infiltrators remain in the state.

A significant portion of his address focused on the BJP’s decision to rename Karimganj district to Sribhumi. In a direct jab at senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, Shah remarked that those with “roots in Italy” would never understand the cultural significance of such a name change. He emphasized that while the Congress sought to dilute the region’s identity, the BJP remains committed to protecting the “Jaati” (community), “Maati” (land), and “Bheti” (foundation) of the people.
