The Director of Education (Schools), Government of Manipur, has proposed curtailing the duration of the upcoming summer vacation for the academic year 2026–27, citing repeated disruptions to the academic calendar due to the prevailing law and order situation in the state.
According to the proposal, the summer vacation may be revised to June 15 to June 27, 2026, instead of the earlier notified schedule from June 8 to June 27.
The move is aimed at compensating for the loss of instructional hours caused by frequent school closures across the state.
In a formal communication addressed to Commissioner (Education-S) Ng. Bhogendra Meitei, the Director stated that ongoing interruptions have adversely impacted academic activities and students’ learning outcomes.
Shortening the vacation, he noted, would help ensure completion of the prescribed curriculum within the current academic session.
The proposal has evoked mixed reactions from parents. While some have welcomed the decision as a necessary step to recover lost study time, others have called for more stringent measures to address the widening academic gap. Some parents suggested that the summer break be reduced further to just one week, while a few even advocated cancelling the vacation altogether, given the extent of disruption.
Concerned guardians also urged authorities to explore alternative measures to bridge the learning gap, noting that the academic calendar in the state has been severely affected and requires urgent corrective steps in the interest of students.
