A team of the women’s body Imagi Meira, which marched to clear National Highway-2 (Imphal–Dimapur) following the central government’s announcement on free movement of commuters and essential goods, has given a 10-day deadline to the Governor of Manipur to materialise the decision.
Convenor Th. Sujata made the announcement in Imphal on Sunday after security forces stopped the group at Kangpokpi, a Kuki-dominated district, while they attempted to ensure safe passage for Meitei commuters along the highway on Saturday.
The central government, during a tripartite meeting on September 4 involving the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Manipur government, and Kuki bodies, declared that the NH-2 would be opened for free movement. The Kuki Zomi Council (KZC) also assured cooperation with security forces to maintain peace along the route.
Sujata noted that since the outbreak of violence in Manipur, Meitei communities have avoided traveling on national highways, particularly NH-2, considered the state’s lifeline. She warned that failure to implement the free movement agreement within the deadline would trigger intensified agitations.
