Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday reiterated that eviction drives across Assam will continue to clear alleged encroachments, stating that “illegal Miyas” will not find peace during his tenure.
Speaking to reporters after an official event at Jamugurihat, Sarma said fresh eviction notices were issued earlier in the day in the Behali area of Biswanath district. “Evictions will continue. Illegal Miyas don’t have peace till I am the CM,” he said, underscoring his government’s firm stand on the issue.
Sarma further remarked, “There will be no peace even if you pray at samadhi. Illegal Miyas have to be in tension till I am the CM. If I am not there, then it is a different thing.” The term “Miya,” often used to describe Bengali-speaking Muslims, has been reclaimed by some members of the community in recent years.
The Chief Minister also announced that the state government plans to introduce a new anti-polygamy law during the Winter Session of the Assam Assembly on November 25. “If any person engages in polygamy, there will be seven years of rigorous imprisonment,” he said.
Observers have pointed out that eviction drives, which have intensified since the Sarma-led government took office in 2021, largely affect the Bengali-speaking Muslim population and may have political implications ahead of the state assembly elections scheduled for next year.
