The Kuki Christian Leaders’ Forum (KCLF) has called for peace, reconciliation and restoration of trust amid escalating tensions between sections of Kuki and Tangkhul communities in Manipur’s Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.

In a statement, the forum expressed grave concern over the growing hostilities and condemned all forms of violence, warning that the unrest could deepen divisions in a state already grappling with prolonged ethnic conflict. KCLF said it was deeply disturbed that a local misunderstanding involving a few individuals at Litan village had spiralled into a wider cycle of violence, describing the situation as “most unfortunate” and “heartbreaking.”

The forum noted that the violence has led to loss of innocent lives, destruction of homes and properties, and widespread fear and trauma among residents. It urged all parties to immediately cease hostilities to prevent further suffering.

Stressing that violence cannot ensure justice or lasting peace, KCLF cautioned that continued confrontation would only deepen social wounds, strain relationships and impose long-term hardships on families and society.

Highlighting the shared historical, social and spiritual ties between Kukis and Nagas, the forum said the communities are bound by common faith, intertwined histories and cultural connections. It appealed to community leaders, civil society organisations and youth groups to reject misinformation, exercise restraint and commit to dialogue.

The forum also warned against the misuse of religious teachings, stating that ethnocentric interpretations of the Holy Scriptures contradict the message of peace and risk intensifying ethnic hatred. It urged church leaders to promote unity, healing and reconciliation.

Raising concern over the spread of misinformation and inflammatory rhetoric, KCLF appealed to the public to refrain from circulating rumours and divisive content, noting that unverified information has already aggravated tensions.

The forum further urged authorities to ensure fair and impartial investigations into the incidents that triggered the escalation, warning that delays in justice could worsen the fragile situation.

Reaffirming the longstanding bonds between Kuki and Tangkhul communities, KCLF called on all peace-loving citizens to reject hatred and choose dialogue, unity and reconciliation over conflict.
