Solar entrepreneur Moirangthem Seth from Manipur has gained national recognition after Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted his work in the 129th edition of Mann Ki Baat for bringing off-grid electricity to remote communities.
Seth has been working to address persistent power shortages in interior parts of Manipur, where access to reliable grid electricity remains uneven despite recent improvements. Growing up amid frequent power outages, he turned to solar energy as a practical and sustainable solution for villages located far from dependable power networks.
Through his initiative, hundreds of households in remote areas of the state have gained access to solar power.
The impact has extended beyond homes, with several health centres adopting solar-based systems to ensure uninterrupted basic services in areas where conventional electricity supply is fragile or absent.
In the national radio broadcast, Prime Minister Modi cited Seth’s efforts as an example of locally driven innovation, emphasising how renewable energy can bridge long-standing infrastructural gaps while strengthening healthcare and livelihoods at the grassroots level.
The episode also acknowledged another entrepreneur from Manipur, K Chokhone Krechina of Senapati district, for her contributions to rural livelihoods and women-led initiatives. Her work highlighted the importance of grassroots entrepreneurship in employment generation and sustainable development in rural and agrarian regions.
Together, the mentions underscored Manipur’s growing profile in community-led innovation, with local entrepreneurs adopting context-specific solutions to address development challenges from the ground up.
