The Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), in collaboration with the Manipur State Rural Livelihood Mission (MSRLM), Imphal West, conducted a one-day awareness programme on the theme “Rights of a Woman and POCSO Act, 2012” at Ibudhou Pakhangba Haraopham, Malom Tuliyaima today. The event drew active participation from Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across the Imphal West district.
Addressing the gathering, W. Phajatombi Devi, MCS, Member Secretary of MSCW and Additional Director (IPR), Manipur, emphasized the vital need for women to be fully aware of their legal rights to build an equitable and empowered society. “No woman should live in ignorance or oppression,” she stated, urging women to recognize their roles from grassroots institutions to international platforms.
Highlighting MSCW’s ongoing efforts to address women’s grievances—ranging from sexual harassment and domestic abuse to various injustices—she reiterated the Commission’s commitment to uplift and empower women across the state. She also stressed the significance of being informed about laws like the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
Smt Lourembam Dayabati Devi, Member, MSCW, echoed similar sentiments, noting that many women fall victim to injustices due to lack of awareness about their rights. She said the awareness drive aims to educate women about legal protections and available channels for seeking justice.
State Mission Manager (HR) of MSRLM, Smt Rinabai Salam, spoke on the role of SHGs in empowering women through sustainable livelihoods. She highlighted the importance of legal awareness, including knowledge of the POSH Act, to combat violence and nurture future women leaders.
MSCW Chairperson Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang, in her keynote address, underscored the importance of knowing legal rights, saying that informed and empowered women are critical to building resilient families and a just society. She also stressed the importance of raising awareness about the POCSO Act for a safer environment for children.
