Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated the Varun Beverages Ltd. bottling plant at Mendipathar in North Garo Hills district. The plant, established with an investment of Rs 340 crore, is the largest bottling facility in the Northeast region.
In a statement on his official X handle, Sangma thanked Varun Beverages Chairman Ravikant Jaipuria and Varun Jaipuria for choosing Meghalaya for this major investment. He said the new plant will provide a significant boost to the local economy and create meaningful job opportunities for the people of the region.
The Chief Minister also recalled the late Purno A Sangma’s vision to develop Mendipathar into an industrial area. “He made the promise in 1990, and today that promise takes a giant step forward,” he said.
Mendipathar is the only town in Meghalaya with a railway head, further strengthening its strategic importance as an industrial hub.
