Shillong, May 5: The East Garo Hills District Magistrate has issued a public advisory mandating the registration of all migrant workers in the district under the Meghalaya Identification and Registration (Safety & Security) Act, 2020.
The directive calls on employers, contractors, and migrant workers to comply with the law, emphasizing that the measure is intended to ensure safety, maintain public order, and safeguard the rights of both workers and residents.
According to the notification, migrant workers must register and obtain a valid registration card. Employers are responsible for completing the process through the online portal www.investmeghalaya.gov.in by submitting required documents such as Aadhaar, EPIC, or PAN card along with a photograph.
The advisory warns that employers who fail to register workers may face fines ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹1,00,000, while repeated violations could lead to imprisonment. Unregistered workers may also be penalised.
The order further cautions that any harassment or discrimination against migrant workers will be punishable under law, reinforcing the government’s commitment to both regulation and protection.
