Shillong, March 16: Meghalaya Governor C H Vijayashankar convened a special session of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) today at 11 am in Tura after receiving a letter from 21 Members of the District Council (MDCs) claiming that Chief Executive Member (CEM) Albinush R Marak has lost the House’s confidence.

The District Council Affairs Department issued a notification stating that the Governor received the signed letter on March 14, which alleged that the CEM no longer enjoys the support of the Executive Council. Invoking Rule 36(5) of the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 1951, the Governor scheduled the session to address the matter under Rule 22(1) and handle related business.

This development comes amid rising tensions in Garo Hills following the CEM’s notification last month barring non-tribals from GHADC elections. The order triggered protests, clashes, and incidents of violence, including arson and property damage, across West Garo Hills and neighboring districts.

Officials reported vandalism of vehicles and shops, with two fatalities and multiple injuries resulting from police firing during the unrest. A curfew remains in effect in several areas, with security forces deployed to maintain order. Authorities have temporarily eased restrictions in some locations to allow residents to access essential supplies, while closely monitoring the situation.
