Shillong, May 13: The Meghalaya government has officially opened a newly constructed bridge and bypass road below the old Umiam Dam bridge to facilitate the movement of heavy vehicles towards Shillong. The inauguration was led by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong in the presence of Cabinet Minister Damanbait Lamare and senior officials from the Public Works Department and district administration.

Built under the Special Assistance to State Capital Investment Scheme at a cost of Rs. 23 crore, the project is designed to ease traffic congestion caused by restrictions on heavy vehicles using the deteriorating Umiam Dam bridge. Officials noted that the new route will significantly improve transportation efficiency while enhancing public safety.

Despite the opening of the new bridge, traffic regulations and scheduled vehicle movement, as directed by the East Khasi Hills administration, will continue to remain in force to ensure smooth and safe passage along the corridor.
