Aizawl, April 25: BJP national spokesperson Shazia Ilmi launched a sharp attack on Congress and its allies, accusing them of betraying half of India’s population by opposing the women’s reservation bill. Addressing a press conference, Ilmi said the parliamentary debates on April 16 and 17 over the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, the Delimitation Bill, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill marked a defining moment for India’s democratic future.
Ilmi alleged that the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, and DMK had revealed a “moral decline” by resisting legislation aimed at ensuring equal participation for women. She described their conduct as “undemocratic and anti-women,” claiming that these parties had “stabbed millions of Indian mothers, sisters, and daughters in the back.”
She argued that the opposition had consistently erected barriers to delay women’s entry into Parliament and state assemblies, calling it a decades-long conspiracy. Ilmi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken a firm stand, stressing that women’s representation was not a political favour but a natural right that had been denied for decades.
According to Ilmi, the Prime Minister underscored that Indian women were no longer passive observers but active participants capable of shaping electoral outcomes. She pointed to the success of women leaders at the panchayat level as evidence of readiness for greater roles in national and state legislatures. Warning of electoral consequences, Ilmi said that delaying this transition amounted to strangling democratic progress and that women’s anger would be reflected in every election.
