The newly renovated War Memorial at Chanmari in the heart of Lunglei town was formally inaugurated on Friday, marking a solemn tribute to the courage and sacrifice of India’s fallen soldiers. The ceremony was led virtually by General Officer Commanding of 3 Corps, Lt Gen. Abhijit S. Pendharkar, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, while Brig. Puspendar Sorayan, Commander of 23 Sector Assam Rifles, represented him at the site and unveiled the memorial before laying a wreath in honour of the martyrs.
Wreaths were also offered by Lunglei Municipal Council Chairman Lalzuithanga, District Sainik Welfare & Resettlement Officer Maj. Rebecca L. Chhakchhuak (Retd), leaders of the Mizoram Ex-Services League, and family members of the fallen heroes. A two-minute silence was observed as ceremonial honours were rendered.
In his address, Lt Gen. Pendharkar described the memorial as a lasting symbol of courage and unity, urging that the legacy of the martyrs be carried not only in monuments but in the hearts of the people. Brig. Sorayan reiterated Assam Rifles’ commitment to Mizoram’s welfare, highlighting contributions in security, healthcare, education, and anti-drug initiatives.
LMC Vice Chairman K. Lalrinawma noted the memorial’s significance for the people of Lunglei, while Maj. Chhakchhuak recalled its origins on land allotted by the Mizoram government in 1977. She added that the renovated structure now consolidates the names of 108 martyrs, including 103 from World War II and five from post-Independence operations.
Standing prominently in central Lunglei, the War Memorial embodies honour, remembrance, and the enduring gratitude of a community to its heroes.
