The Mizoram government has announced plans to launch a helicopter service connecting Aizawl with Churachandpur in Manipur to improve regional connectivity and strengthen cultural ties.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma made the announcement during a meeting with leaders of the Hmar Students’ Association (HSA) from Mizoram, Assam, and Manipur. He also said a Mizoram House would be established in Churachandpur to foster closer people-to-people links between the two states.
Officials noted that while Manipur currently operates a helicopter service on the route, irregular schedules have made travel difficult. Following ethnic unrest in May 2023, Aizawl has become a key transit point for residents of Churachandpur and Pherzawl districts traveling to other parts of India.
The HSA leaders appreciated the Tuivai Bailey bridge built by the Mizoram government, which restored connectivity to Churachandpur and Pherzawl after more than two decades. The bridge, inaugurated in February, replaced the previous collapsed structure.
The delegation also met Mizoram Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama, Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, and Opposition MLA Robert Romawia Royte to discuss preparations for the HSA general assembly and the Sikpui festival scheduled in December at Saipum in Kolasib district.
