A 29-year-old member of the Naga Village Guards (NVG) was killed in an ambush allegedly carried out by suspected Kuki armed cadres in Manipur’s Ukhrul district in the early hours of Friday, April 24.
According to sources, the deceased has been identified as Horshokmi Jamang, a resident of Chatric Khullen village in Kamjong district. According to a statement issued by the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), the incident occurred near Sinakeithei village while NVG personnel were on a routine patrol. The organisation said the ambush took place along the sensitive Sirarakhong–Sinakeithei stretch, where tensions and armed movement have been reported.
TNL stated that members of the Naga Village Guards stationed near Sirarakhong were attacked by suspected Kuki militants, including cadres operating under Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangements, along with other armed groups. Jamang was killed on the spot.
Describing the incident as part of ongoing disruptions in the region, TNL noted that Jamang had been actively involved in safeguarding his village and nearby areas. It termed his death a loss suffered in the course of defending local land and community interests.
The organisation extended condolences to the bereaved family and reiterated concerns over the prevailing security situation, highlighting repeated incidents affecting civilians and village guard movements.
Ukhrul and adjoining districts continue to witness periodic tensions involving various armed groups, with patrol routes and village peripheries remaining highly sensitive.
