Kohima, Apr 17: As part of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) Annual General Meeting 2026 held in Kohima, an official interaction was convened between the AFI leadership and district-level athletics associations from across Nagaland.
Representatives from all district athletics associations of the state participated in the meeting, which focused on strengthening grassroots athletics and improving coordination between national and district-level bodies. The session provided a platform for discussions and exchange of views on the development of athletics in the region.
Key discussions included the restructuring and strengthening of district associations, increasing the frequency of grassroots-level competitions, and expanding AFI’s education and certification programmes for coaches and technical officials. Emphasis was placed on capacity building, standardisation of coaching and officiating practices, and developing a structured talent identification and development system in Nagaland.
The meeting was addressed by Dr. Lalit Kumar Bhanot, President of the South Asian Athletics Federation; Bahadur Singh, President of AFI; Adille Sumariwala, Vice President of World Athletics; and Abu Metha, Vice President of AFI. The speakers discussed the importance of inclusivity, grassroots participation, and the role of athletics in youth development.
As part of its community outreach programme, AFI leadership and delegates also visited the Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home. During the visit, members interacted with children and local residents and distributed gifts.
The outreach programme was led by Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee Anju Bobby George, along with a team of athletes and officials. The visit coincided with the 53rd Foundation Day of the Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home.
On the occasion, members of the Sunshine Orchestra, a musical initiative mentored by A. R. Rahman, presented musical performances. The programme also included remarks of appreciation by Neibanuo, the matron of the orphanage.
AFI officials stated that the initiatives reflect ongoing efforts to strengthen athletics at all levels while also engaging in community-focused activities.
