Agartala, June 12, 2026: A tragic road accident in the Demdum area under the Fatikroy assembly constituency claimed the life of a 28-year-old youth on Thursday afternoon, while the truck driver sustained critical injuries after being assaulted by an angry mob following the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Pantha Debbarma. The accident occurred when a goods truck bearing registration number AS-25-EC-1375 collided head-on with a motorcycle (TR-02-J-7222). The impact of the collision was reportedly severe, leaving Pantha Debbarma dead on the spot.
The sight of the bloodied body lying on the road created panic and anger among local residents. Soon after the news spread, a large number of people gathered at the accident site. In the midst of growing tension, an agitated mob allegedly caught hold of the truck driver, Liton Kar (38), and severely assaulted him.
Following the attack, the situation in the Demdum area turned tense. Police personnel from Fatikroy Police Station along with TSR forces rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control. Despite repeated appeals and discussions by administrative officials with the locals, the anger among the crowd continued to rise.
Later, the mob set the goods truck on fire, and the vehicle was completely gutted within a short time. Meanwhile, police rescued the critically injured driver, Liton Kar, and admitted him to Unakoti District Hospital for treatment. He is a resident of the Salema area under the Surma Assembly constituency.
After receiving information about the incident, Liton Kar’s family members, including his wife and brother Uttam Kar, reached the hospital. Uttam Kar alleged that his brother was beaten by the mob after the accident and suffered serious injuries, particularly to his head and eyes. Doctors are reportedly planning to refer him to Agartala for advanced treatment.
A tense atmosphere continues to prevail in Demdum, with a heavy deployment of police and TSR personnel maintaining security in the area to prevent any further escalation.
