Guwahati, April 29: More than 1,000 people have died in road accidents across Assam during the first three months of 2026, according to official figures released by the Transport department on Tuesday. The state recorded 4,219 accidents and 1,008 fatalities between January and March, compared to 4,232 accidents and 1,035 deaths in the same period last year.
Authorities noted that while the overall number of accidents remained nearly unchanged from 2025, nine districts Guwahati City, Kamrup, Nagaon, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Golaghat, Barpeta, Dhubri, and Hojai together accounted for almost half of the fatalities.
The department emphasized that the figures highlight persistent road safety challenges in the state, with densely populated and high-traffic districts continuing to report the highest casualty rates.
