Agartala, March 28, 2026: A pearl cultivation project based on oyster farming was inaugurated today in Kaulikura and Jalai gram panchayats under Chandipur assembly constituency, with the initiative aimed at creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural women and strengthening self-help group activities.
The project was formally launched in the presence of Tinku Roy, who said the initiative marked a new beginning for women’s economic empowerment in rural areas of the constituency.
Addressing the inaugural programme, Roy said the project was introduced after completion of a 45-day intensive training programme for local women beneficiaries, enabling them to acquire practical skills in oyster-based pearl cultivation.
He said the initiative would help women generate income from home while enhancing their confidence, professional capability and role in supporting family finances.
“Oyster-based pearl cultivation is a modern, environment-friendly and high-value livelihood activity. Even when started on a small scale, it has the potential to grow into a significant source of income,” the minister said.
According to him, the project is expected to open up new employment avenues in the area, strengthen the rural economy and provide fresh momentum to self-help groups functioning in the two gram panchayats.
Roy further said the initiative would contribute not only to women’s economic independence but also to improving their social standing and self-confidence.
He expressed hope that the project would bring lasting positive changes in the professional lives of rural women and help build a stronger and more prosperous society.
