Gangtok, April 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for development projects worth nearly ₹4,000 crore in Sikkim, underscoring the government’s commitment to accelerating growth in the Northeast. Addressing a public gathering at Paljor Stadium, he described the region as India’s “Ashtalakshmi” and highlighted Sikkim’s vital role within it.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the Centre has moved beyond the “Act East” policy to an “Act Fast” approach, ensuring rapid progress in healthcare, infrastructure, education, and tourism. He noted that the long-awaited Sevok–Rangpo railway line is advancing quickly, promising Sikkim its first-ever rail connectivity. Modi also pointed to the proposed expressway linking Bagdogra Airport with Gangtok, which is expected to cut travel time significantly and boost tourist inflow.

Highlighting the state’s ecological wealth, Modi praised Sikkim’s biodiversity, noting that more than 500 bird species and 700 butterfly species thrive in its forests. He said the government is working to strengthen connectivity so that tourism potential can be fully realized. To further support local communities, he announced the development of 1,000 homestays across the state, aimed at generating employment and enhancing visitor experiences.

The Prime Minister criticized previous Congress governments for neglecting the development needs of Sikkim and the wider Northeast, asserting that progress has accelerated under the BJP. He also commended the youth of Sikkim for their achievements in sports and reaffirmed the Centre’s support through initiatives like Khelo India. In healthcare, Modi said new programmes launched on Tuesday would address longstanding gaps in infrastructure and services.
