Agartala, February 04, 2026: Tripura has begun making measurable progress under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the Centre’s flagship rooftop solar initiative aimed at promoting clean and affordable energy at the household level.

Since the launch of the demand-driven scheme in February 2024, a total of 1,848 rooftop solar systems have been installed across the state. These installations have benefited 1,859 families, providing them with access to renewable electricity and reduced power bills. To support the adoption of rooftop solar in Tripura, the central government has extended financial assistance amounting to Rs 12.72 crore.

Under the scheme, all residential consumers with grid-connected electricity connections from their respective distribution companies are eligible to apply through the national online portal. The simplified digital application process has helped households directly avail subsidies and track installation progress, encouraging wider participation even in smaller states like Tripura.

Officials said rooftop solar systems are expected to significantly improve energy reliability for households while easing pressure on the conventional power grid. For Tripura, which largely depends on power sourced from outside the state, the expansion of rooftop solar is seen as a step towards enhancing local energy self-reliance.

At the national level, over 20.85 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed so far, benefiting more than 26.14 lakh families, with central financial assistance exceeding Rs 14,771 crore. The government estimates that installing rooftop solar systems in one crore households will generate about 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 720 million tonnes over a 25-year period.

With steady adoption underway, Tripura is gradually aligning itself with the country’s broader clean energy and climate goals through increased household participation in rooftop solar generation.

Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik provided this information in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today.
