The Lok Sabha on Tuesday witnessed a fiery exchange during the ongoing Monsoon Session, as Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a scathing attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, holding him accountable for both the ongoing unrest in Manipur, recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir.

Speaking during the debate on Operation Sindoor, Priyanka questioned the Centre’s handling of internal security, alleging that “the entire state of Manipur burned under Amit Shah’s watch.” She demanded accountability from the Union Government and raised pointed questions about the security lapse that allowed terrorists to strike in the heavily militarised Baisaran valley, a popular tourist destination.

“Where were the soldiers when the valley was full of tourists? Why did no intelligence agency pick up the threat? Has anyone resigned—be it the IB chief or the Home Minister?” she asked, criticising Amit Shah for not taking moral responsibility.

She also accused the Home Minister of deflecting attention from the current crisis by referring to former Prime Ministers Nehru and Indira Gandhi, and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, instead of addressing the present-day issues directly in his hour-long response.

Backing her stance, Congress Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi pointed out that even Jammu & Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had acknowledged a security lapse in the Pahalgam attack. “But the Home Minister did not. The blame lies with this government, not with past leaders,” Gogoi said.

In response, Amit Shah claimed that the three terrorists killed in Operation Mahadev were responsible for the Pahalgam attack and praised the coordinated efforts of the Army, CRPF, and J&K Police in neutralising them.

Despite this, Priyanka Gandhi expressed deeper concerns, stating: “While we discussed Operation Sindoor, we forgot to ask: how did Pahalgam happen? And more importantly, why is Manipur still burning?”

The Manipur crisis, which has persisted for over a year, continues to dominate parliamentary debates, with no concrete resolution yet in sight.
