Normal life came to a standstill in parts of Kangpokpi district on April 25 as a 10-hour shutdown was observed following the killing of two village volunteers in Mulam, Ukhrul district.
The shutdown, called by the Committee on Tribal Unity, was enforced from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. to honour the deceased, reflecting heightened tensions in the region a day after the incident.
Shops and business establishments remained closed, while educational and private institutions suspended operations during the shutdown. However, vehicular movement was largely unaffected.
The bodies of the two volunteers are scheduled to be laid to rest at the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Phaijang later in the day. The burial programme, set to begin at 12 noon, is expected to draw a large number of people.
The killings in Mulam have raised fresh concerns over security and stability in the area, with authorities keeping a close watch on the situation.
