*Sikkim Election Commission deploys special taxis to ease voter movement on polling day*

Gangtok, April 24: The State Election Commission (SEC) of Sikkim has initiated a series of voter-friendly measures to ensure smooth conduct of the Municipality Election 2026 at Ward 10 Diesel Power House under Gangtok Municipal Corporation. Acting under SEC instructions, the Transport Department, with support from local taxi driver associations, has designated five local taxis and two city runners as “election special taxis” to ferry voters to polling stations. These vehicles are stationed at Deorali, Bojoghari, and Indira By Pass taxi stands to provide convenient public transport access on polling day.

On April 23, 2026, the SEC carried out an inspection of the three polling stations at Palzor Namgyal Girl’s Senior Secondary School to review arrangements for basic amenities including drinking water, toilets with running water, rain canopies, and medical assistance. To further support inclusivity, the Women Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department has deployed officials and wheelchairs to assist senior citizens, persons with disabilities, expecting mothers, and infirm voters. The Health & Family Welfare Department has also readied a medical team with a mobile ambulance to provide emergency care if required.

These initiatives reflect the SEC’s commitment to good governance and accessible electoral participation, in line with its constitutional mandate under Article 243ZA, which vests the superintendence, direction, control, and conduct of all municipal elections in the Commission.
