In a step to enhance public access to clean drinking water, MLA of 27-Gangtok, Delay Namgyal Barfungpa, inaugurated a Water ATM today at MG Marg, Gangtok, in the presence of the District Collector and other senior officials.
The inauguration was attended by Chairperson UDD Chung Chung Bhutia, Executive Councillor MG Marg Sandeep Malu, ADM Gangtok, Commissioner GMC, and representatives from Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd. and the District Administrative Centre, Gangtok.
Sponsored under Torrent Pharma’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, the Water ATM dispenses both hot and cold purified water at a nominal rate of ₹1 per litre. The collected fee will be used exclusively for the maintenance and servicing of the unit, promoting sustainable use while preventing water wastage.
The District Collector highlighted the importance of government-industry partnerships for inclusive development and noted that the facility would benefit both residents and tourists, particularly during the winter season. He also urged citizens to carry non-plastic water bottles, as the use of 1-litre plastic bottles is banned in the state.
A similar Water ATM is planned at STNM Hospital to provide warm drinking water for patients and visitors, ensuring comfort and dignity. The initiative underscores Gangtok’s commitment to public health and sustainable practices.
