Gangtok, Oct 30: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over Sikkim during the next 24 hours, warning of possible landslides and transport disruptions in hilly areas.

The IMD said the prevailing weather conditions are influenced by a well-marked low-pressure area over East Vidarbha and adjoining South Chhattisgarh, along with a depression over the east-central Arabian Sea. These systems are expected to bring widespread rain to parts of eastern and northeastern India.

According to the IMD, Sikkim and sub-Himalayan West Bengal are likely to experience isolated extremely heavy rainfall on October 31. The department has urged residents and local authorities to remain cautious and take preventive measures against possible flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging.

During the past 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, several regions including Telangana, Konkan, Goa, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh recorded heavy rainfall, with Telangana witnessing exceptionally heavy rain exceeding 30 cm in some areas.

The IMD defines heavy rainfall as precipitation between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, very heavy rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm, and extremely heavy rainfall as exceeding 204.4 mm.

Authorities in Sikkim have been advised to monitor vulnerable areas and ensure preparedness for any emergency arising from the expected rainfall.
