The 59th Nathula Vijay Diwas was commemorated on Thursday at Nathula Pass with solemnity and patriotic fervour, in the presence of Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.
The observance marked the continuation of last year’s declaration officially recognizing September 11 as Nathula Vijay Diwas, evolving from the earlier Nathula Diwas. The day honours the courage and victory of Indian soldiers during the 1967 Nathula skirmish against Chinese forces.
Dignitaries paid tribute to the officers and soldiers who sacrificed their lives defending the nation in challenging terrain along the India-China border. As part of the commemoration, a bust of Late Major General Sagat Singh, then General Officer Commanding of the 17 Mountain Division, was unveiled. Major General Singh had led Indian forces during the 1967 Nathula engagement, successfully repelling enemy advances. The bust now stands as a symbol of courage and leadership.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang extended congratulations to the Indian Army, particularly soldiers serving at Nathula, and expressed respect for the fallen heroes. He highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vibrant Village Program for transforming border villages and commended Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for his support to India’s armed forces.
At the state level, the Chief Minister noted Sikkim’s pioneering initiatives, including a 20% reservation in police recruitment for Agniveer soldiers and support for families of martyrs, reflecting the government’s commitment to soldier welfare.
The event was attended by MLA Pamin Lepcha, Major General MS Rathore, GOC of the 17th Mountain Division, family members of Late Major General Sagat Singh from Rajasthan, senior military officials, government representatives, and civil society members.
