Agartala, July 03, 2025: A case of alarming medical negligence has come to light in Tripura’s capital after a pregnant woman was administered an expired injection, prompting legal action and widespread concern over drug safety practices in local pharmacies.
The incident took place after Saurabh Deb, a resident of Math Chowmuhani in Agartala took his pregnant wife to gynecologist Dr. Abhijit Shil for a routine consultation. Based on the doctor’s prescription, Deb purchased an injection from Ritwika Medical Hall in the city.
However, the situation took a disturbing turn when Deb, upon checking the label post-administration, discovered that the injection had already expired. He immediately lodged a complaint at the local police station and informed Dr. Shil about the mishap.
“My wife’s condition slightly deteriorated after the injection. I have notified both the doctor and the police. We are extremely concerned for her well-being,” Deb told the media persons.
When contacted, the owner of Ritwika Medical Hall admitted the error and expressed surprise over how the expired drug was issued. “We dispose of expired medicines regularly. I’m not sure how this one was overlooked. This is highly unusual,” he said.
An employee at the medical shop echoed a similar sentiment, claiming expired stock is cleared monthly. Nevertheless, the incident has drawn public criticism for the apparent lapse in safety protocol and oversight.
In a comment that has further fueled public anger, the pharmacy owner said, “Only the doctor and God can say what will happen to the patient now.”
With growing concerns about accountability, the focus has now shifted to the question of responsibility should the patient’s condition worsen. While health authorities have yet to issue an official statement, police have registered an FIR and initiated legal proceedings. A departmental inquiry is also expected.
