Agartala, June 18, 2026: The Tripura High Court has expressed serious concern over allegations of sexual harassment of a young man inside the East Agartala Police Station and rejected the affidavit submitted by the state government in connection with the case. The Court directed the state to file a fresh affidavit with a detailed explanation of the incident.

The case relates to allegations made by a young man, Saikat Debnath, who claimed that he was sexually harassed inside the police station premises after being brought there. Following the complaint, the investigation was handed over to the Crime Investigation Department (CID).

During the hearing, the Court was informed that the CID investigation report supported the allegations and indicated that the alleged incident of sexual harassment had taken place inside the police station. Expressing deep concern, the Court questioned how two outsiders could enter a secured place like a police station and commit such an act.

The Court observed that if the incident occurred in the presence of police personnel, it raised serious questions about the responsibilities and duties performed by the officers concerned. The bench also expressed dissatisfaction with the role of the concerned Under Secretary and directed that necessary action be initiated.

Advocate Purushottam Roy Barman, reacting to the Court’s observations, said that allegations of sexual abuse inside a police station were a matter of grave concern and raised questions about the functioning of the law enforcement system. He stressed that all persons involved must be identified, held accountable, and strict action should be taken.

Following the High Court’s directives, attention has now shifted to the fresh affidavit to be submitted by the state government and the further course of action in the case.
