Agartala, May 19, 2026: Doctors at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital have successfully carried out a rare and highly complex surgery to treat severe liver-related complications and portal hypertension, marking the first such procedure to be performed in Tripura.
The patient, a 42-year-old man from the Udaipur area of Gomati district, had been suffering for a prolonged period from complicated liver-related ailments. He frequently required hospitalization due to severe abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, and episodes of vomiting blood.
The patient later sought treatment at the Department of Gastroenterology and Gastro-surgery of AGMC and GBP Hospital. After detailed medical examinations, gastro-surgeon Dr. Dipankar Shankar Mitra diagnosed him with “Non-cirrhotic Portal Hypertension” and advised urgent surgical intervention.
Considering the complexity of the case and the patient’s unstable physical condition, Dr. Mitra consulted cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Kanaknarayan Bhattacharya. Following extensive discussions, the medical team decided to perform a “Splenorenal Vascular Shunt” procedure along with a “Splenectomy” to reduce portal hypertension and control the patient’s declining hemoglobin levels.
However, due to the patient’s fragile condition, he was shifted to the Cardiovascular Department on April 6, 2026. Over the next month, doctors stabilized him through intensive monitoring and specialized medical care to prepare him for surgery.
The operation was finally conducted successfully on May 13 by a 10-member surgical team led jointly by Dr. Kanaknarayan Bhattacharya and Dr. Dipankar Shankar Mitra. The five-hour-long surgery involved removal of the damaged spleen and successful implantation of a vascular shunt connecting the portal vein to the renal vein.
Cardiovascular anesthesia specialists Dr. Rimjhim Chakma and Dr. Manimoy Debbarma managed anesthesia and post-operative monitoring throughout the procedure.
At present, the patient is under close observation in the CTVS ICU. Doctors stated that his condition is stable and improving steadily, and he has already started taking oral fluids.
The surgeons described the operation as the first successful surgery of its kind in Tripura for liver complications and portal hypertension. Previously, patients requiring such advanced treatment had to travel outside the state.
Supporting technicians and scrub nurses including Sudipta Mandal, Ratan Mandal, Arpita Sarkar, Moushumi Debnath, Sourav Shil, Annabahadur Jamatia, Jaydeep Chakraborty, Abhijit Deb, Minhajuddin, and Sourav Tripura also played crucial roles during the operation.
The patient’s family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, healthcare workers, and hospital administration for successfully conducting the expensive and complicated surgery free of cost under government support.
