Agartala, January 09, 2025: In a major push to boost the agarwood industry, the Tripura government has announced the development of an integrated agarwood cluster at a cost of ₹27.42 crore under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE) scheme. The cluster will feature nurseries, plantations, distillation units, and training centers aimed at enhancing skill development and employment in the sector. Over 7,000 individuals are expected to benefit from the initiative.
The announcement was made during the fifth International Agarwood Conclave and Buyer-Seller Meet held at Pragya Bhavan on Thursday. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, addressing the gathering, highlighted the deep-rooted cultural and historical connection between Agartala and the agar tree.
“Agartala derives its name from the agar tree, which once grew abundantly in this region. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visits to the state, has shown keen interest in agarwood cultivation,” said Dr. Saha.
He emphasized the strategic importance of the North East in India’s agarwood production, noting that the region accounts for nearly 96% of the country’s agar trees. “Tripura has already emerged as the second-largest agarwood-producing state in India,” he added.

The Chief Minister revealed that Tripura currently has around 1.5 crore agar trees. He also announced that the construction of an agarwood market at Kadamtala in Dharmanagar is nearing completion, which will facilitate direct trade between buyers and sellers.
Further strengthening the sector, a ₹15-crore Agar International Trade and Research Centre is being set up under the North Eastern Council. The center is envisioned as a hub for both scientific research and commercial exchange.
Dr. Saha also shared plans for a single-window online platform to streamline agarwood exports, developed in collaboration with the central government. Welcoming international delegates to the conclave, he reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting agar farmers.
Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, speaking as a special guest, underscored Tripura’s favorable climate for agarwood cultivation. He called for greater public participation and scientific training to scale up production. “The government is committed to providing comprehensive support to establish a robust agarwood industry in the state,” he said, urging investors from outside Tripura to explore opportunities in agar-based manufacturing.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including DG Sribharani from the Department of Commerce and Industry, Joint Secretary of NERAMEK Anshuman Dey, PCCF RK Shyamal, and Special Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Forests. Ishantar Shobhapandit, Regional Director of the Indian Chamber of Commerce, delivered the vote of thanks.
The conclave concluded with a visit by the Chief Minister, Forest Minister, and other guests to stalls showcasing a variety of agar-based products, reflecting the sector’s growing potential in the region.
