Agartala, November 24, 2025: A three-day national-level workshop was recently organized in Bengaluru by UNESCO, the Indian Journalists Union (IJU), and the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists to observe the International Day for the Elimination of Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.

The workshop focused on key areas including journalist safety, legal capacity building, digital security, fact-checking, and gender-sensitive protection. A total of 40 journalists from various states across the country took part in the programme.

Notably, young journalist Sutapa Guha participated as the only female representative from Tripura, marking a significant achievement for the state’s media fraternity. The training emphasized modern reporting modules, field reporting techniques, and professional skill enhancement.

Bringing together voices from newspapers, radio stations, television outlets, and digital media, a cohort of 30 journalists including eight northeastern states of India took part in a three-day national workshop on “Safety, Legal Empowerment, and Gender-Responsive Protection of Journalists in India.”

President of the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) Geetartha Pathak delivered a powerful address at the workshop, calling for collective commitment to end impunity for crimes against journalists. He highlighted that freedom of speech under Article 19 of the Constitution is not only a journalist’s right, but also the people’s right to know.

In her keynote address, Ma’aly Hazzaz, Chief and Regional Advisor for Communication and Information at UNESCO South Asia, highlighted the crucial role of journalists as the backbone of democratic societies and essential links between citizens and information.

Speaking about her experience, Sutapa said the workshop provided exposure of international standards that enriched her professional perspective. She stated that each session was practical and insightful, adding that the knowledge gained would significantly contribute to improving her journalistic work. She also expressed gratitude to UNESCO and IJU for the opportunity.

Sutapa’s achievement has sparked widespread appreciation and enthusiasm within Tripura’s journalist community.
