Mizo National Front (MNF) leader Lalruatkima has predicted the defeat of the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) in the 2028 Mizoram assembly elections, alleging that the party has lost the confidence of the public.
Speaking at an MNF meeting in Serlui South block of Kolasib district, the former rural development minister criticised the ZPM government for its governance over the past two years. He accused the administration of increasing taxes and collecting cess for road construction without ensuring visible improvements.
“The ZPM is in the ICU. People are dissatisfied and worried under its rule. The party will not win the 2028 assembly elections,” Lalruatkima said.
He further stated that the Congress has been losing significance in Mizoram, much like its decline across the country. Expressing confidence in the MNF’s prospects, he said the party is poised to win the upcoming Dampa bypoll.
Polling for the Dampa by-election is scheduled for November 11, with 20,790 voters, including 10,185 women, set to decide the fate of five candidates. Counting of votes will take place on November 14.
The ZPM has fielded singer and preacher Vanlalsailova, while the MNF has nominated its senior vice-president and former health minister R. Lalthangliana. The Congress has fielded its vice-president and former transport minister John Rotluangliana. BJP candidate Lalhmingthanga and People’s Conference nominee K. Zahmingthanga are also contesting.
The bypoll was necessitated following the death of incumbent MNF MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo on July 21.
