Suspended Congress leader – Ampareen Lyngdoh hailed the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government’s decision to scrap the Meghalaya Regulation of Gambling Act (MRGA), 2021.

Addressing the mediapersons, Lyngdoh stated that “The choice is sound, because it represents the will of the people. Correct or incorrect arguments will always be made, but if a sizable portion of the populace decides they oppose the Gaming Act, then we must listen to it.”

The statement came after the Minister in-charge of Taxation Department – James K Sangma has assured to see that the MRGA, 2021 is repealed.

The East Shillong legislator noted that every agenda has its benefits & drawbacks and the concerned decision has been undertaken based on whether the citizens of Meghalaya are prepared for a casino mentally, spiritually and morally.

“There is also a general opinion that Meghalaya is probably not prepared morally and spiritually to handle those scenarios,” – he stated.

Lyngdoh also recalled that she was the first to offer revisions, when the Gaming Bill was introduced in the Assembly last year.

“Of course there are advantages, but if disadvantages outweigh advantages, you must consider what people desire. That’s great, and we’ll go ahead and repeal it,” – she continued.
